Most small business websites are brochures.
They sit there and describe the business. Here is what we do. Here is our team. Here is how to reach us. All of it accurate, all of it static, none of it actually working.
A brochure is a thing you hand someone. A website is supposed to be a thing that works while you sleep. That is the difference, and most sites are stuck on the wrong side of it.
A working site does jobs a brochure cannot. It gets found when someone searches for what you offer. It answers the question that was about to stop someone from reaching out. It moves a stranger one step closer to becoming a customer, then makes that step easy to take. It tells you what people looked at and where they left, so you learn something every week instead of guessing.
The fix is not redesigning the homepage. A prettier brochure is still a brochure. The fix is deciding what the site is actually for. What should happen when someone lands on it. What you want them to do next. What you need to learn from them. Once that is clear, the design follows, and it tends to look nothing like the brochure you started with.
We think about a website the way you would think about hiring. You would not hire someone to stand in the lobby and recite facts about the company. You would hire someone to move the business forward. Your site should earn its place the same way.
If your website looks fine but nothing happens on it, that is usually what our free audit surfaces first.
